2018 in Review: 5-Stars ⁎⁂⁎

Five-star ratings tend to be a rarity for me these days, they’re reserved for books that affect me on a large emotional scale. I state here:

I absolutely loved it and thought it the best of its genre. Whatever little things that may have bothered me were forgotten because I’m in awe. Truly amazing work.

They’re the crème de la crème, the type that stay with me a long time. Suffice it to say, they’re my all-time favourite books.

➊ First 4-Star of 2018…

26803158Title: Blood Moon (High Moor #3)
Author: Graeme Reynolds
Publisher: Horrific Tales Publishing
Year: 2015
Genre: Horror

Atrocities committed in the name of war. In this incredibly brutal finale, the world attempts to deal with the fact that werewolves are real, and oh-so-dangerous. Security measures are taken and, on both sides, death is dealt to those undeserving. As the body count increases exponentially, difficult decisions have to be made, and extreme action has to be taken.Read my full review here.

I was lucky to discover this trilogy, and honoured to read it. Werewolf horror at its finest, and I hope Reynolds one day returns to this world. I’m sure it has much more to offer.

10857081 Title: John Dies at the End (John Dies at the End #1)
Author: David Wong
Publisher: Titan Books
Year: 2007
Genre: Horror

“Soy sauce” is the name for the mystifying new drug that begins to plague David Wong’s life. David Wong isn’t actually his real name. Did you know that “Wong” is the most common surname in the world? And “John” is the most common first name in the world? And yet there’s not a single person named John Wong! Wait, where was I?➛ Read my full review here.

It was difficult to write a review and put into words how my brain regarded this disorganised heap of madness. Give it a try – you’ll either love it or hate it.

32861307 Title: Dark Matter
Author: Michelle Paver
Publisher: Orion Publishing Group Limited
Year: 2010
Genre: Horror

Five men and eight huskies make their way to the Arctic, specifically to Gruhuken; an uninhabited bay that the expedition will spend the next twelve months. As the last days of summer fade, darkness descends until the sun becomes a distant memory. Jack, eager to work, finds himself alone when his companions are forced to leave, one by one. Soon enough, the nightmarish ambience takes its toll, especially when a horrific figure makes itself known.➛ Read my full review here.

What else can I say, other than I one hundred percent loved it?

Victoria McQueen discovers her mind can do something very special – it can summon a bridge that can transport her anywhere she wants to go. One day, in a fit of dangerous thinking, she finds herself within the vicinity of a very unstable child abductor; Charlie Manx. A masterpiece of weird. Vic “The Brat” McQueen was a star, in all her tattooed glory. I can’t say just how much I loved it, and since it was my first experience with Hill’s storytelling, I can’t wait for more.

That’s it! I cried, I laughed, and I damn well loved every second.
